You must install all critical Windows updates (including Service Pack 3 for Windows XP). SQL Server 2008 setup also requires .NET Framework versions 2.0 and 3.5, and their service packs. Many updates are cumulative so they may require several turns of rebooting and running Windows Update again before everything is up-to-date. Without all updates SQL server will not install, e.g., WayQuest application will not be able to run.

Always create a database backup before upgrading the software.
